Wikipedia says: “The Gulabi Gang (Gulabi in Hindi means "pink") is a women's vigilante group that is known for their bright pink saris and their attacks on accused domestic abusers. The group first appeared in Banda district, Uttar Pradesh, as a response to widespread domestic abuse and other violence against women. The group consists of women between 18 and 60 years old, and are known for their bright pink Saris. It is reported to have spread and since 2010, and it has been active across North India, both on the streets and in local politics."
As a woman of South Asian descent myself, I have always felt connected to these women. The Gulabi Gang are fighting tooth-and-nail for their rights in an environment that is set up to fail them. The fact that they have made so much progress locally and gained so much attention internationally, really speaks to how fearless they are, and how truly universal their struggle is.
